Hey there, welcome back to SEO on the Go. I’m your host, Ryan Kelly. Today, I’m going to be answering a question I got asked the other night. I was giving a presentation to new entrepreneurs, a small group of entrepreneurs, and somebody raised their hand and said, “I have a dumb question. What is metadata?” And I said, “That is not a dumb question. It is a planet from Star Trek. I’m just kidding, it’s not. However, what it means is metadata is a kind of programming that you can be in charge of that goes behind your website. Here’s what it is. When you go to Google and type in something like, “restaurants in Santa Rosa, California” and you see those organic listings on Google and there’s a blue headline and then a couple of lines of text, black text. That blue headline is called a title tag, and those two little lines of black text is called description tag. That title and description tag together are what’s called metadata. What it is that you’re providing to Google behind your web page is the information on what Google should be presenting as your title and your description when someone searches for you. So, having good metadata is important. Most websites automatically pull it for you and it’s usually garbage. So, you need to look at your website, look at the foundation that it’s built in, make sure that you’re writing engaging title tags and description tags that are totally relative to the page that they’re on. That’s what metadata is.
